Homemade Thanksgiving Food Gift Baskets

Homemade Thanksgiving food gift baskets are wonderful hostess gifts on this special holiday. If you've never made a gift basket before, follow my assembly suggestions. Regardless of your budget, you will find ideas that will be helpful.

Natural colored wicker baskets are the ideal containers, mainly because of the color. Then you can line the basket with filler materials in the colors of autumn. Shred can be purchased or you can make your own filler materials by cutting crepe paper or tissue paper in narrow strips. The preferred colors are the same as the color of autumn leaves; orange, gold, yellow, and rust. If you plan on using colorful gift items, choose a neutral color for the filler; clean straw or narrow strips of brown wrapping paper. If you have a paper shredder, it does a nice job with most types of paper.

In addition to colorful gourds or very small pumpkins, food items are appropriate gifts when putting together Thanksgiving food gift baskets. Make your food decisions based on whatever the hostess or recipient of your gift would enjoy. Fill in empty spaces with individually wrapped tea bags or walnuts in the shell. Tea towels or pot holders are not only useful gift items, but they can be used to cushion the other gifts.

Homemade Thanksgiving food gift baskets require some planning; particularly with colors. Too many different colors make it look too busy. My suggestion is to plan each item so the colors will work together. The colors of apples and pears are a good place to start. Then decide on the color that works best for the filler; when in doubt, go with neutral filler like straw or brown paper shredded. The rustic look is appropriate for this holiday. If you plan to include a towel or pot holder, be safe by choosing a solid color that works with your other gift items. However, if you find that you have selected all solid color items, choose a printed towel with a fruit design.

Types of foods that would work in making gift baskets: fresh or dried fruit, nuts in a can, candy, cookies, tea bags, a small can of gourmet coffee, caramel apples individually wrapped in Saran Wrap, and anything chocolate. Also, snack foods like crackers, prepackaged cheeses, mustard, jellies, bread sticks, salsa and chips. For a decorative touch, add a small bag of candy corn.
