Homemade Patriotic Gift Baskets

Gift Basket Ideas For Soldiers

American Flag

Patriotism has many meanings for different people. Patriotic gift baskets are one way to acknowledge your support for men or women serving in the armed forces. Begin the process by choosing an empty gift basket or other container with a patriotic theme. A white or neutral color basket or container with red, white, or blue purchased shred or tissue paper cut into thin strips. Small unbreakable pails are a nice alternative to a wicker basket; and much easier to arrange also. If you choose a pail don't forget to include an American flag or two.

Fill the container with favorite beverages, candy, and snacks. Add several small American flags amongst the gifts. Another idea is to use a combination of red, white, and blue curly ribbon as the bow.

Personalize your patriotic gift baskets with gifts and snacks that are meaningful to the recipient.

If you are watching your budget, visit your local dollar-type store. Walk through the aisles and keep your eyes open for red and blue items; you'll be surprised at what you find. Also, check for baskets, ribbon, bows, etc.

Involve the children by using these free military printables to place in your homemade patriotic gift baskets.

Now, let's get to the food and gift items that you might want to include. Of course, it's always best to personalize what you place in the basket by choosing items that the recipient will enjoy, favorite candies, etc.

Here is a list of some gift suggestions which you may want to consider including in your patriotic gift baskets.

  • CD of patriotic music
  • DVD of a patriotic movie such as 1776
  • A diary or journal
  • Baseball-type cap with American Flag logo
  • Patriotic lapel pin
  • Playing cards
  • Book: Chicken Soup for the Soul of America
  • Book: Chicken Soup for the Veteran's Soul
  • Beverages: tea bags, gourmet coffee, cans of soda or beer, etc.
  • Snack Foods: chips, salsa, nuts, pretzels, etc.
  • Candy or cookies: choose their favorites

If you would like to include some homemade treats, here are several snack recipes. I've also included several wrapping and decorating ideas for these snacks.

Another easy idea is to make star shaped cookies and decorate them with patriotic colors and sprinkles. Make it even easier by purchasing prepared sugar cookie dough in the refrigerator section of your local grocery store.

Or, keep it super simple, by choosing a clear glass jar with a lid and layer with red, white, and blue jelly beans or any other appropriate colored candies. Finish off the jar by with patriotic stickers.

If you are the crafty type, you may prefer to paint a galvanized pail to use as the container. Visit this page on my website for painting directions.

Patriotic gift baskets make great host or hostess gifts if you are invited to a Fourth of July cookout. This is an opportunity to use a more unique container. Shop at your local supermarket, party supply store, or stores like Target or Walmart for large plastic bowls with patriotic themes. Another creative container is a patriotic theme top hat turned upside down. Party supply stores usually carry top hats before July 4th.

It's important to select lightweight items to place in these kind of containers. Cans of nuts, paper cups, napkins, corncob holders, plastic ketsup and mustard containers are all good selections. If children will be included in the celebration, add baloons, jump ropes, bubbles, gum, and candy. For a decorative finishing touch add a couple of red, white, and blue pinwheels.
