Lavender Crafts
Many lavender crafts make wonderful gifts, particularly for women. That would include homemade bath and body products -- see links below for specific lavender recipes. The necessary materials can be in the forms of fresh plants, dried flowers, or infused oils. Each recipe will indicate which form is needed.
If you enjoy gardening, you might want to grow your own lavender, either in your garden or in small flower pots. A nice gift would be to transfer a small plant into a decorative planter as the centerpiece in a gift basket dedicated to things all lavender or all bath products.
How to dry lavender:
- Start by spraying the plants clean at least a day before picking them.
- Harvest the plants by picking the flowers on a dry day.
- Spread the flowers to dry on a screen so that the air circulates to dry the flowers.
- When thoroughly dried, store in a sealed bags or jars (glass retains the integrity of the flowers longer).
Lavender oils:
There are two different kinds of oils:- Infused oil, which can be used as a massage oil. Here is my
lavender oil recipe.
- Essential oil is very strong and can cause skin rashes. It's best to purchase this oil and follow the directions. Essential oils are usually used as a fragrance enhancer for candles, potpourri, etc.
Lavender potpourri:
Lavender potpourri is another lovely gift idea. Many potpourri recipes are complicated with lots of ingredients and can be expensive. Here is a more simple recipe...
Ingredients:
- 2 cups dried lavender flowers and/or leaves
- 2 teaspoons dried lemon rind
- 2 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
- 12-15 drops of lavender essential oil
- 1/4 cup orris root (a fixative which will help the scent)
Directions:
- In a bowl, mix the dried lavender, lemon rind, cinnamon sticks, and essential oil until well combined.
- Place this mixture in a plastic bag; add the orris root and shake to distribute.
- Close the plastic bag and allow the potpourri to rest for at least a week; shaking gently several times.
Presentation:
- Place the potpourri is a decorative jar with a lid, or
- Place it in a decorative cello bag and tie the bag closed with a pretty ribbon. If desired, you could then place the bag in a potpourri bowl or place it in a lavender crafts gift basket.
