Decorative Gift Bags and Tote Bags as Gift Containers

gift bag

Tote style gift bags can be used as a container to hold several small gifts instead of a wicker basket. Bags are easy to work with and readily available; you can purchase these bags in card shops, drug stores, dollar-type stores, and most stores that sell wrapping paper.

These decorative gift bags are available in many sizes and colors as well as designs for every holiday and many themes. Choose a bag that is not too large for the contents. If you make a gift assortment in a shopping bag, it looks better if some of the gifts are visible over the top. Fill the bottom with crumpled paper which will make a firm foundation to hold your basket upright as well as to elevate gifts so they stand out. After placing the gift items in the bag, place some shredded paper, purchased shred, or clean straw between the gifts; this should help to hold the gift items in place.

If desired, place the completed gift bag in a clear cellophane bag; this will help hold everything in place and eliminate dust. Close the bag over the top and tie it with curly ribbon or raffia.

For example: If you wish to make a gift for a gardener, start by choosing a floral theme bag. Include items that are related to gardening. Here are some gift suggestions: gardening tools, coffee mug with a floral theme, note pads with flowers, packets of seeds, a small flower pot, herbal teas, iced tea mix, shortbread cookies, and a tea or kitchen towel with a floral theme.

TIPS:
  • Make sure you choose a bag that has a flat, stable bottom that will enable the bag to stand on it's own.

  • Cut a piece of cardboard to fit the bottom of the empty gift bag. This will an additional stability factor to the crumpled paper.

  • Place the food and gift items as the weight is equally distributed.
  • Wrap some of the gift items in tissue paper; use the same color tissue paper for all gift items. This is a good idea if some of the packaging is not too attractive.
