Stainless steel and white as well as various colors of enamel finishes look very nice; plastic is fine if your gift items are not too heavy.
Stores like Walmart, Target, and Sam's have colanders at reasonable prices. Some dollar type stores carry them also as well as colorful towels, curly ribbon, gift tags, and a variety of kitchen utensils that are nice items to place in a food related gift basket.
