Soup Mugs or Coffee Mugs

As Gift Containers

gift in a mug

Soup mugs, coffee mugs, or unbreakable beer steins make very nice containers to hold a selection of small food or gifts. Mugs are readily available, easy to work with, and can make an inexpensive gift. Start by choosing an appropriate mug; for example, a sports theme or any theme that would mean something to the recipient; also work well for holiday gifts for office personnel.

When you go shopping, choose a soup, beer, or coffee mug that will hold the gifts you intend to include. Place tissue paper, shred, clean straw, or some other filler in the bottom to hold the gift items in place. Instead of these filler materials, small wrapped candies are another option. For example, place several wrapped red and green Hershey's Kisses in the mug for a Christmas gift. For more wrapped candy ideas, stroll the aisles of your local drug store or supermarket for items that will add eye appeal to your gift. This is particularly attractive when using a see through mug.

Don't forget the children. Start with a mug that means something to him or her; such as their favorite tv celebrity, cartoon, pet, etc. Then fill the mug with small items that you know they will enjoy; school supplies, make up for girls, and their favorite candy bars or gum.

There are many different theme gifts you can make using coffee mugs, soup mugs, or large soup cups. One idea is a gift for gardeners or someone who loves plants or flowers. The design on the mug can indicate your theme. Fill the mug with herbal tea bags, sweets, and a pretty notepad. Wrap the finished gift in cello paper, tie it with raffia or curly ribbon, and add a small decorative item or silk flower. For a nice presentation, select at least one gift item that is 3-4 inches taller than the mug.

Dollar stores usually have a nice selection of coffee mugs as well as gifts in place in the mugs. You aren't limited to ceramic mugs; look for heavy plastic or metal mugs, too.

If you make bath soaps, scented candles, or potpourri, a mug or wide cup works well to present the gift. Simply wrap your homemade item(s) in clear paper or small cello bags before placing in the mug. A pretty presentation idea is to place the filled mug or cup in a decorative cello or netting bag or sheets of cello paper and tie over the top with ribbon. Wrap ribbon around the mug and through the handle; tie in a bow.
