Make A Bouquet Garni Bag

Place in a Food Gift Basket or Gourmet Gift Basket

fresh herbs

A homemade bouquet garni bag is a nice (and useful) gift to place in your homemade food gift baskets. Make several and use them to fill in any empty spaces of a homemade gift basket. The traditional bouquet garni is a bundle of dried herbs, wrapped in cheesecloth, and used to season soups, sauces, or stews. After the cooking process is finished, the bag of herbs is removed and discarded.

Some herbs that are appropriate are parsley, thyme, basil, tarragon, rosemary, marjoram, savory, and bay leaves. You can also add a few peppercorns and other whole spices such as cloves.

Use cheesecloth bags to hold the herbs. You can purchase these bags from some suppliers or it's really easy to make your own. Simply purchase sheets of cheesecloth from your local supermarket or craft store. Cut a 6" square for each bag. Fill the bag with the herbs and tie it closed with cotton string. TIP: Leave the string ends long enough to be tied to a pot handle, so it can be easily removed.

An option is to place herbs and spices in a tea ball instead of cheesecloth bags.

An inexpensive gift basket idea would be to purchase a small basket, place a tea towel in the basket, add a gift of soup-in-a-jar, a bouquet garni, and a gift card tied to a wooden spoon. If you aren't up to making your own soup mix, you can purchase a couple of dry soup mixes in your local supermarket. You might want to include a package of soup crackers in your gift basket.
