Homemade Asian Gift Basket Ideas
An Asian gift basket is a wonderful gift idea for anyone who enjoys "Chinese" food; and who doesn't? If you want to make your own, begin by deciding on an appropriate container to hold your food and other gift items. In addition to wicker or wire baskets, bamboo steamers and woks are practical containers.
Begin the assembly process by placing clean straw, excelsior, or narrowly shredded brown paper inside the container you have selected. The filler material will help hold the food and other gift items in place as well as create an attractive background. Start placement by placing the heaviest and largest items in the center of the container for balance and stability. For detailed steps and finishing suggestions, visit my
assembly web page.
Most supermarkets now have a section for Asian foods which should help you choose items to complete your homemade
Asian gift basket.
In addition to white rice and cellophane noodles, sauces such as teriyaki, soy sauce, hoisin, sweet and sour, and duck sauce are commonly used in Asian cooking. Fresh ginger and garlic and important ingredients in many Asian dishes as well as Five Spice, which are available in fruit and vegetable stands as well as supermarkets. Oriental fruits (fresh or canned) such as guava, star fruit, mandarin oranges, pineapple, persimmons, and tangarines are all good choices to place in homemade Asian gift baskets. In addition to food related items, you could include stir fry utensils, sesame oil, chopsticks, and an Asian cookbook. Don't forget several packages of herbal or green tea and a few individually wrapped fortune cookies. If you prefer to include beverages with alcohol, rice wine, sherry, or sake are available in most liquor stores.
A gift idea that is easier is to place an Asian inspired teapot in the center of a small wicker basket; surround the teapot with tea and other small unbreakable gift items.
For a final decorative touch an Oriental fan (available in party supply stores), small paper umbrellas to place in drinks, or a couple of silk exotic flowers. Small potted bamboo plants are now sold in many fruit and vegetable departments and is a lovely gift to include as it is considered lucky. Wrap it all up in clear cellophane and tie with curly ribbon or raffia.
